Ian Stanley was born just outside Birmingham, England in 1967. As the youngest of four boys, he was always prone to bringing home insects and small mammals – whatever he could catch. His love of the outdoors grew after moving to the Toronto area in 1975 with his family. Ontario, with all its untamed areas, especially the north, really drew Mr. Stanley in. In the late 1980s, he started carrying a camera with him and trying to record the animals he saw. In the 1990s, his parents and grandparents got him into bird watching, which became a turning point for him. Small point and shoot cameras would not get the shot of many of these small fast moving animals and other birders would discount sightings he would mention to them. This is when the progression from point-and-shoot to SLR and then digital SLR with ever-growing lenses occurred. Mr. Stanley turned to the internet to teach himself about photography and learn how to attain the best images with his equipment. Now he spends any time he can out with his camera before the sun is up, waiting patiently for any wildlife to come into his focus. To date, he has photographed more than 300 species of birds, more than 100 species of butterflies, and as many species of mammal as he has had the fortune of seeing in the wild in Ontario. Mr. Stanley is constantly striving to improve shots on species he already has and trying to locate and photograph species that have so far eluded him. He researches species and does all he can to find out the behavior and habitat of each, then he patiently awaits the opportunity to see and photograph these beautiful creatures.
